Tan Son Nhut 1968 footage

Thu Feb 16, 2012 11:15 pm

I was sent this link today, the first 5 1/2 mins has some great aircraft spotter footage taken at Tan Son Nhut in 1968. 8)
The range and diversity of aircraft (civillian and military) to be seen is quite spectacular.

Who can identify the most types in the footage?

A smorgasbord of aircraft!
Radial engined birds earning their keep right along side big jets.

Thanks for that link, Hairy, a great find. I'm surprised it hasn't attracted more comment. There is even a de Havilland Dove on there, maybe the military Devon version used by the Brit Embassy in Saigon. Near it is a Dornier Do 28.

There is a nice story about the Devon. It flew into an upcountry strip one day and the American tower operator asked what the roundel signified. "It belongs to Her Majesty's Royal Air Force, Sir." said the pilot in very English tones. The tower guy replied "That may be true but it looks like a mighty fine target to me!"

Great film.

Makes me wish I'd bought the dozen large reels of 8mm film at auction a month ago. They were labeled with the names of various Vietnam air bases, some USAF made, some home made.

They sold for $220. I got 200 books and 400 videos on aviation, for $40.

Excellent footage with music that goes perfectly with the scenes. I reckon that was a sapper attack there at the end?

Funny part for me was the tug operator hauling ass down the taxiway with the DC-3!

Glad I was not the only one to notice that. That thing was in a hurry. I also got a kick out of the civilian Cessna 337 taxiing in. Just another day at flight school. :)
