Great story!! I like the guys matter of fact narration and ability to knock all the pompous chrome off the subject and tell the real story, and the 'tweeking' of the Officers stateside by just following the rules.

Great story. It also reminded me that my father who was based at Alameda Naval Air Station at the end of the war was in charge of a storage shed with L-4s in it. He said that as news came that the war was over that the officer in charge ordered him to put two L-4 on a truck. He asked "what for and where is the paper work." The officer told him "never mind that just do it". Those two L-4 were saluted off the base that night and of course no paperwork--Stolen. Big investigation until the base commander told them to forget about it the war was over. My dad always suspected that the base commander was involved. Now I found out that the crate was worth more then the plane.

Great story. Always trying to learn more about the L 4's

I traced my planes " war history ". It was simple. Picked up at Cubhaven on 8/13/45 flown 3 hours into West Virginia and crashed. And that was it. After repair it stayed in service until 1952.
