If she'd gone down in the Rocky Mountains, do you think they'd be in such a rush to start poking around in icy lakes? But, they'll find a nice trove of monied suckers...er...investors who will be lead to believe it's the Lost Dutchman Mine-and the milking will commence.

Can anyone find a copy of said photo? It's always interesting to see what it takes to start a search.

Speaking of searches, I tried finding their various photo evidence on the TIGHAR site (I know I've seen that part before) but it's a pain to navigate. Maybe when I get the time tomorrow I can put together an expedition to find what I want on their site. Heck, maybe that's where Amelia's been hiding all these years...

I don't have a dog in this hunt.

Being a former govt guy (Coast Guard) still searching for a WWII plane.....I'd like to know who in the govt did the photo analysis. We work with a govt agency that specializes in this type of photographic work and they're very good at what they do. If that agency says it's worth it....then I'd say it has credibility. If indeed a piece of landing gear, it could also be from a wrecked WWII plane.

Skeptical myself of TIGHAR's claims, but I will say this.....they have Bob Ballard onboard with this project, so they must have something compelling for him to support it. Not sure what his level of personal involvement will be, but the fact that he was there to speak at the press conference says something. Will be interesting.

From an AP article on today's news... Unedited....
"The expedition will coincide with the 75th anniversary of Earhart's departure on the ill-fated attempt to become the first woman to fly around the world. Previous visits to the island by the group have recovered artifacts that could have belonged to Earhart and Noonan and suggest they might have lived for days or weeks after landing on a reef.

State Department officials say Clinton will use Tuesday's event to lend her high profile to the search while also lauding Earhart's legacy as a pioneer for women and a model of American courage. She will also note the Obama administration's keen interest in the Pacific.

The "event will underscore America's spirit of adventure and courage, as embodied by Amelia Earhart, and our commitment to seizing new opportunities for cooperation with Pacific neighbors founded on the United States' long history of engagement in the Asia-Pacific region," the department said in a statement."

In other words, Clinton doesn't really care about Earhart or finding anything, it's a glorified photo opportunity to make points on the "Women's History" issue and say something nice about out allies in the Pacific.
It's a chance for her to get into the media on a non-controversial issue. No doubt TIGHAR will use it as a ringing endorsement of them and their endless searches.

Pretty much sums it up. That is why I think that Ballard showing up at the press conference has a much greater significance than anything Sec Clinton might have to say.

Is "the picture" available online somewhere? I've looked and haven't found it.

Seems to me that if there was a decent picture, Tighar would be waving it around like a.... well, I dunno... But they would be making an effort to put it out there where everyone could see.
