I actually saw it. Its in the basement of the San Diego Air and Space Museum (well it was 1 year ago or so)........ Looks good. Apparently they actually legally acquired it (I forget how, I heard the story on it), at first I was somewhat skeptical, and figured it was "hot" but it wasn't .... I'm sure the price reflects what the taxpayers have invested in it, not the acquisition cost for the current owners.

For a million bucks, you would think they would pay for shipping!

There were a few of them show up in Recycler when they retired them the first time. IIRC the going price was about $5K. I have a small piece of F117 fin someplace, I use it as a paint scraper :)

Still trying to get their million for this thing, huh?

Look here for more info on some of the background of this piece... if you're not a member of the forum, you won't be able to see the photos, unfortunately. I'll re-post them here if there's demand.

No One is going to even pay $10,000 for it or 1% of asking price. It isn't a piece of Ricthofen"s triplane or ? Is it titanium? It has a scrap metal price plus value for colectibility. On the show "Pawn Stars" the grandson bought a small panel from an SR-71 for $1200. Would love to know how much it appraised for and resold for.
My appraisal, not accounting for it's scrap metal value, would be $3,000. in this economy.

Their appraiser on Pawn Stars said the panel was worth about 1200.00. Of course he said those were rivet holes around panel.

Saw the episode tonight. Apparently the panel wasn't titanium. Appraiser said only select areas were made of titanium.

I doubt they actually want $1 millionty billionty dollars for their fin. Pricing it an extremely high price assures that it goes to the top of the list on Ebay so that you can't help but see it if you look at anything aircraft related on Ebay. An SR71 fin is going to be an impulse buy for whoever buys it. I doubt that there are to many people searching for SR71 fins. The high price insures that we all see it, start talking about how dumb these guys are, until one of us finally says "I'm going to buy that thing". I think they just want someone to spout off some low ball offer so that the buyer feels like he is winning- like $50,000 when really $4,000 would probably buy it.
