I will be in Durham for a few days next week. I am looking for anying aviation related to take in during my spare time.

WHAT I DO KNOW...

Fort Bragg, 82nd Airborne War Memorial Museum - Visited in 2001.

USS North Carolina, Wilmington - I just might try to get down to this one. There is an OS2U on the deck.

MY QUESTIONS...

Airborne and Special Operations Museum, Fayetteville - I visited this one back in 2001. Has anything been added since then? Any aircraft on display outside now?

Airborne Express, Wilmington - My notes indicate there is an F-101 ath the Airborne Express facility at the airport. Apparently it is displayed like a gate guard. There may also be a T-33 there. Has anyone see these? I need a street address so I can create some Goolgle Maps to find it.

Asheboro Municipal Airport - My notes indicate that a B-25 may be undergoing restoration there. There also may be a F-84 on the airport. Has anyone seen either of these?

Museum of Life and Science, Durham - My notes indicate they may have DC-3 and Grumman F11. Has anyone been there? How are the aircraft displayed?

City of New Bern - My notes indicate there is a Grumman F11 in this town. I don't know if it is displayed or not. Has anyone seen this F11?

USN MCAS Cherry Point - My notes indicate the possibility of a F4U, PBY and AV-8 on display. Are any of this aircraft there? If they are there, are they accessible to the public?

What else am I missing? Anything in hangers at airports in the area? Any restorations going on?

Mike

That would be the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte. They have an F-102. Charlotte is a little out of range for this trip. I may be able to get there next month.

Hi Mike... there is an F-11 on the side of the road (Rt.70) as you enter New Bern from the west... I seem to remember it was outside a VFW post. I saw it last about three years ago. There used to be an AV-8A on the gate at Cherry Point... saw that sometime in 98/99. Do not believe there's an F4U or PBY at Cherry Point though there must be some other items, as it is a huge USMC air base. Have fun!

Cheers,
Richard

No... I don't think you are wrong. I have done a little Googling today and it looks like my notes may be incorrect. Better to find out now rather than after I have gone out of my way! Thanks!

I have googled the VFW at New Bern and now have a set of maps. Thanks for the tip!

Looking forward to seeing you at Carp.

You're welcome.

Just to correct something, the DC-3 was moved from Durham to Spencer, NC (near Salisbury) for the NC Transportation Museum. It's now in storage awaiting a static restoration. According to my info, it's the only survivor to have been used by Piedmont Airlines. It will go on display there when a new building is constructed.

There's a nice collection at the Asheboro airport, including the B-25, a BT-13, Stearman, TBM, C-45, and other displays.

Mike:

The NCANG has at least one AH-64 on display outside their base at the R-D airport.

Last time I saw them was back in 1999, so after 9/11 there may have been changes to the access to the area.

Asheboro Municipal Airport -

I was last there in 2003; the B-25 was nearing completion -I understand it has made a flight by now-

What used to be the Peddycord Foundation for Aircraft Conservation, has also a C-45, an AT-6, a Cessna O-2A in USN colors, a couple of pristine Merlin engines on stands (and they work), there is also a Piper Firefly (?) that was reportedly flown by Charles Lindbergh.

They also have on display:

BT-13
Broussard
O-1
PT-17
F-84F 51-1426

Maybe a little too far for you, but Lexington NC the P-51D Obsession based there:

Winston Salem Airport:

FJ Fury
T-33
F-105
A-7

There were a couple of Canadair CL-44s, and a group of UH-1Hs

Cheraw, SC:

Folland GNAT
Three or four Strikemasters
B.A. Bulldog

Hickory:

Small museum with a Curtiss Robin, and a couple of PTs.

The Wilson, NC airport, has an Army National Guard building with a UH-1B.

Good luck!

Saludos,

Tulio

After class today I went hunting with my trusty Cannon AE-1 shotgun. I was hunting birds, warbirds that is.

Tulio... Where the heck were these birds?!?! Are they in a hanger someplace? If they are displayed outside I am going to feel like an idiot, because I didn't see them. Could you give me a few hints?

I did get down to Asheboro. The museum was closed, but I think I managed to get a few shots of the F-84 through the gap in the gate. Maybe next month when I am back in the area I may get a chance to visit again.

I might get a chance to go hunting again on Thursday.

There is a Grumman F11F at Goldsboro/Wayne County Municipal Airport...at least, there was one as of 2003 when I left the area.

Mike:

The aircraft were part of a defunct museum (so I was told); the map shows their approximate location. There is a perimetral road and heading north, (within the airport boundaries though) you will see them on your left. They are below the level of the road, where the hill slopes down to the runway.

Re: Goldsboro:

I don't recall seeing the F-11F Tiger, but there are some neat photos inside the terminal; one of them has a Guatemalan pilot while he was undergoing flight training at Goldsboro.

Saludos,
