Carl Schmieder Remembered

Some of us remember Carl, who for years was an avid warbird member, T-6 formation leader, acro check pilot and good guy.
Bill Greenwood was cleaning up and found this letter and asked me to post it.
Matt especially may want to see it.

Carl Schmieder

October 13, 1997

Bill,
Thank you so very much for coming to Copperstate and bringing an airplane. It is a good
show and one that can grow into a major show. More importantly, we can have some
serious fun with it, because it is small enough show that it can be relaxed and easy.

We are already planning for next year, and you can do two things to help. One, tell me
what you liked and what you wanted changed. Only if I know can I do anything about it.
Two, plan on coming next year and most importantly, bring a friend with a plane. We
had 41 warbirds this year, up from 29 last year, but if everyone brings just one additional
plane, there will be 82 and that is a major show. Let’s see if it can be done.

Again, thanks for bringing your plane and letting the public see it.

Sincerely,

Carl Schmieder

I have some very fond memories of hanging out in the Schmieder hangar at Deer Valley and bugging the guys while they were working on the P-64 replica. I was a teenager at the time and I'm sure they had plenty to do other than entertain a "teeny bopper" but everyone was always gracious, pleasant, and willing to answer my questions. Rest in peace Mr. Schmieder.

I also think about Carl every day--he was my brother. I thank you all for remembering him, and especially to Matt (hi Matt) for posting the pictures. The only one I had was the one showing him in the cockpit. I treasure the others.

When Carl died, I wanted to write a book about his life, but I was unable to obtain the source material from his wife Carole. But I wonder if there might be enough of his friends left who might contribute stories and pictures. Perhaps we could put together a small memorial volume. I will be happy to compile it, reproduce it, and make it available to anyone who wants it, but I don't have the source material. Conceivably if there is enough interest Carole might be persuaded to give us some help.

In any case, thank you Matt and everyone else who remembers Carl.

Robert,
I'll call you over the weekend, and I would not expect much from Carrol, I can't say what I think of her in a public Forum.

And Hi to Chris aka Fire Rescue, in OK, hope you are well.

Chris Doss, Bill Greenwood, and who ever else that has a story about Carl, please post it here or call Robert and tell it to him. He is trying to learn more about his brothers involvement in Warbirds and Aviation. I talked to him for a hour this afternoon.

I met Carl at the 1990 Denver Air Races. Super nice guy and I do remember him well. I was very saddened at news of his crash. The whole Cactus Squadron were a great group of guys to talk to.
