TIGHAR's current expedition for AE is in its third week and not a single report on WIX? For shame!

Fortunately for all, Squire Gillespie is keeping a daily journal of this magnificent treasure hunt and e-mailing updates back to the poor swabs at TIGHAR headquarters. I must say, for a journal it reads with considerable passion:

Dateline: At sea, 11 July 2012

...The atmosphere aboard is rather like the mood aboard an LST as it approaches an island the troops have to take. They are going into action soon; all “weapons” have been cleaned and checked and rechecked, plans refined and massaged. There is a palpable sense of pressure and stress, but in a good way; everyone is impatient to get started with the mission...

But why should I have all the fun reading it for you? Log on yourself and follow the ever-thickening plot of NIKU VII: TIGHAR Treasure Island!

Laugh all you want, but may I remind you that NIKU VII: TIGHAR Treasure Island has been officially endorsed by the US SECRETARY OF STATE. Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it!

Did I mention that thick-cut cod is back at Long John Silver's?

...and I'm only on the second glass! :D

Maybe I'm just tired, but for me that "...feels just like we're soldiers on an LST heading into battle..." spiel raced right past melodrama into hilarity.

I really, really, really hope TIGHAR will not actually find conclusive evidence that they crashed and perished on this island. I'm going to feel like a complete idiot for almost falling off my chair from laughing so hard at your post Dan K. Maybe its the beers or the shot of Patron I did this evening but I doubt it. This was just too funny. Thanks. :drinkers:

Al,

This spoof wasn't about whether AE & FN are on this island or that island or buried in New Jersey, it's about the way Ric Gillepsie conducts business: Promoting tabloid sensationalism while denigrating those who actually recover classic aircraft from the elements. I am a very, very small fish in the warbird pond, but the fact remains that you and I (as well as many others who post & lurk at WIX) have recovered more classic aircraft as individuals than TIGHAR has managed in 27 years as an organization.

TIGHAR could change the "R" in their handle from "Recovery" to "Research" (which would more-accurately describe what they actually accomplish ), but I doubt that would attract as many potential supporters to the organization.

The intersting thing I've noticed is that they are already laying the groundwork for the next trip with the comments about some of the equipment not working well.

"Well, the 2012 trip showed us what equipment we really, really need to find Amelia's airplane. If you'll just donate another _______, we'll go back and find her the next time."
