Very likely, this is an urban legend.
Microsoft does not announce viruses like the message indicates; this follows the trend of so many other "virus" announcements through the years.
The message varies, some of them state that Bill Gates himself announced on T.V. the newfangled virus, which of course turns out to be a hoax, and gets well intentioned people to send the message to all of their acquaintances...
Your best defense is to keep your virus software updated, at least one firewall, and under no circumstances open any e-mail from someone you don't know, nor download photos or games or cartoons from web-sites you visit, unless you are either 100% sure that they are safe, or you want to run the risk of virus attack.
And even then, you will get hit by a virus once in a while. I was hit by one last week, and lost all the information that I had not backed up in one month. Luckily, most of it is replaceable, and I had a very good back up of all my important files.
Saludos,
Tulio
