Hello all,

Thought I'd see if the WIX braintrust might be able to help this humble model builder. I'm working on a model of an H&P Super Privateer, which of course requires rebuilding the nacelles and adding B-25 engines. I have plenty of pictures of the nacelles from the sides and bottom, but I've scoured the internet and haven't been able to find a nice, clear closeup of the top of the nacelle and carb intake. This is the best I've been able to come up with, but a closer detail shot would be most welcome (if this is regarded as a copyright violation, I'll remove it.)

Image

Incidentally, this photo would also seem to indicate that the nacelles are slightly narrower behind the engines..I had always assumed that the nacelles were completely rebuilt to accomodate the slightly larger-diameter R-2600s, but it looks like they may have retained the original contours.

Thanks,

Steve

The firewall forward is basically late B-25 Bendix carb scoop/cowling so you can also search for B-25 photos showing the very same setup. I would think you could also use the same scale B-25 model as a source of parts. Not sure if someone makes a TB-25J or TB-25N kit that uses the Bendix carb scoops.

Here is a shot of Old Glory when we flew her to OSH that shows the Bendix scoops. I hope this helps.

Thanks Taigh,

I plan to use B-25 engines, cowls and props..but I'll have to scratchbuild the carb intakes, as nobody makes a Mitchell model with the Hayes mods. What it's hard to find a really good photo of is how the intake fairs into the nacelle above the wing. The B-25 has a large opening in the top of the fairing, but the Super Privateer appears to be smooth, as well as shorter than the Mitchell.

I can't imagine you have not already seen it but, just in case, here is a good video walkaround of N2871G. At about 2:48 in the video is a good shot of the scoop and there may be others as I did not watch the entire thing. Good luck with your build!

Thanks for the link! I actually hadn't seen that..I was looking for still images. Some great detail there..looks like they've removed the retardant tanks and installed a set of bomb bay doors..does anyone know if there are plans to further convert the aircraft back to military configuration? Unfortunately, once again all the pics are from ground level looking up. What I'd really like to find is a shot of the top of the nacelle from above. The flyby shot I posted earlier will probably be enough..I was just hoping somebody out in WIXland who has had access to these aircraft might have a better detail pic.

Thanks! That's a great shot, and certainly useful, but again I'm trying to find a pic from above looking down at the top of the intake/fairing. I managed to find this shot of the Naval Aviation Museum Super Privateer. It's still rather fuzzy, but between that and the flyby shot of Tanker 121 I may have enough to go on.

The opening on the back of the scoop is for the alternate air or filtered carb air. There was a filter element back there which was often covered over and eliminated on most B-25's around today. I presume that it was also eliminated on the PB4Y-2's as well.

You might also check Nick Veronico's new book on the Privateer. It just came out and its a good one.

Can someone refresh my memory on the H & P Privateers? One is at Yanks, one is owned by someone in Arizona and the other 2 are still in Wyoming?
