It's an eerie place. Entering the former base, you drive for miles past totally abandoned buildings, some of them three or four stories high, overgrown, their windows gone, before you get to the runway area. Near the runway are big, MiG-29-size roofed revetments under thick earthen topping. Each one has a big blast tube that carries exhaust through a 90-degree turn and out the side of the hangar, and the floors are still covered with the markings for where ordnance trollies are parked, etc.
The East German Air Force simply took their equipment--or somebody took it--and walked away when the Wall fell.
