Here are a couple of shots of the progress on Hanger 2 today. The framing is complete, underground utilities are going into newly dug trenches. Cover for everything coming soon.

When I worked in there a DC-6 went in with lots of room on both tips, and the last aircraft based @ Paine AFB were C-119's.
One thing they eliminated, which I thought should have stayed was painted on the East wall where you pass into the area where the REICHENBERG and Me-163 are housed was the time of, and time allowed for chow, enlisteds 15 minutes, Officers and Non Coms 30 minutes, better poke that hash down your throat there airman-and the mess hall and E Club were across 111th St. from the hanger, about 60 yards. :?

Oddly enough, ATS' Hanger 2, the quonset hut shaped hanger near the control tower, was built after WW2 by ALASKA AIRLINES and getting a DC-4/6 (which made up 99% of ALASKA fleet then) inside involved pulling the outer wing panels but a 737/727/757 went in with plenty of room geek

Re-phrase the question: Does the old hanger or the new hanger in the pics have doors that are big enough to accomodate their B-17E?
If the old hanger has the doors and roof height to accomodate the B-17, then it'd be logical they'd shuffle what's hangered in the old into the new being built. Has anyone learned how this new hanger fits with their future plan to house their B-17E?

B-17 span 103 ft, height 20 ft
DC-6 span 117 ft, height 29 ft.
And I already said that I worked on DC-6's inside the old original hanger along with Boeings 247, a STARSHIP, and a bunch of college students building a 30 ft diameter parabolic carbon fibre antenna shell so ah....yeah, a B-17 will very easily fit in the old hanger. And, since hanger design has advanced just a bit in 70 years coupled with Allens future plans, it's a good bet that a B-17 would fit in the new one too.

The new hangar is going to have a small theater and gift shop and during the summer will be used to stage aircraft for flydays The B-17 has been dormant for years and may never be restored. They also have the Curtiss Jenny and I-16 in storage and will probably be put back on display when the new hangar is complete. there are rumors of new artifacts arriving this summer. There are 2 large hangar doors.

With those guys, no one, especially them, knows what's next there.
I saw them fly the JENNY a couple years ago, watching it make a 'high speed pass' lends credence to the stories that the pilots used to throw bricks at each other. Watching it drift past was more impressive and awe inspiring than having Maj. Ben D. Bumper do a Mach 37 low pass in a Belchfire F-64B like watching a big dragonfly.

The large doors on the new hangar are 80 feet wide, and I was told the tail on a B-17 wouldn't fit in the new hangar but it would fit in the existing hangar. Also they also have to be able to fit the P-40 in when it gets back. They started putting the exterior siding on the east side today, looking good.
