Having just met General Cardinas who flew the mother ship for Yeager's X-1 I find the website lacking in information.

APG85 Refers to "Fertile Myrtle" being rebuilt. There has always been confusion on the identity of Fertile Myrtle. The Existing Fertile Myrtle (45-21787, or P2B-1S BuNo 84029) owned by Kermit Weeks is actually the mothership for the Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket and was a Navy/Douglas effort before being turned over to NACA, now NASA.

B-29 45-21800 was the mothership for the X-1 series. At the USAF completion of their testing of the X-1's it was also turned over to NACA. That is when it apperently picked up the name "Fertile Myrtle" as the operator in the USAF who maintained and flew it always refered to it as just "800". When NACA finished with it, it was sent to MASDC on 7-2-59 and was subsequently scrapped. What a waste for what was probably the most photographed B-29. Of course in 1959, who was interested in an old cut up B-29, other than the few of us who flew and maintained her?
