Is there an industry for this sort of thing? Let's say I wanted replica guns for a P-51D. Where would I go?

There are a few places where you can get a .50 cal,.30 cal even the german machine guns, these have been made for the reenactors I think I saw where you could buy a propane firing .50 for about $1,00.00

Mike are you not telling us about some 'project' or 'something' you are working on??

There's actually alot of places that sell dummy stuff. The newest trend is lightweight resin cast display guns that even for a .50 cal, runs about $500. if you have a jeep or something, it's not bad to have. pm me if anyone wants some sites that sell them.

but i agree with bdk, if you can get a real one, why not??
