Apparently the Weather Channel has kanked Ice Pilots in favor of other programming like 'Worst Space Weather (!!???!!) and 'Iceberg Wranglers' any one know what gives?

They've been planning to revamp the programming lineup and re-format the channel. Ratings are apparently more important than weather to the parent company, such as naming every passing cold front with a scary name for the American viewers. (Even the NOAA weather service is laughing at that.)

FWIW......I'm checking Youtube right now and see full episodes on there.

I love the show but unfortunately it's all about ratings and money. Look at how many times they re-run Pawn Stars. Hard to digest but aparently there just aren't that many interested in flying today. Probably a lot of reasons but the main one I see is the cost of entry into the arena for the average person. I am out as well as 3 friends. To begin with the cost of a license is prohibitive.

but I would like to understand why, with the variety of cargo that these guys fly, why they don't have one or more Herks in service.
Seems to me a C-130 up there would be a very versatile aircraft in their operations.
Short field capable , range , load capability , ease in loading/off loading ,

A Herc would be a very expensive aircraft to operate. They'd have to haul huge loads (at huge expense to the recipient) in order to make it pay off. They've mentioned that very subject in reference to their Electras. They're fast and can handle a big load, but they cost a bundle to operate. If you follow the show, you'll notice the Electras sit idle most of the time, sometimes for long periods of time.

It seems like Pen Turbo's turbine conversion of the de Havilland Caribou would be a great aircraft for Buffalo Airways.

There are presently two civilian Lockheed L382G stretched Hercules based out of Yellowknife for domestic and international cargo charter work. They make the odd cameo appearance on the show.

Forty odd year ago ALASKA AIRLINES bought an L-182 in anticipation of needing a dump truck to haul their income to the bank in the first, abortive Alaska Pipeline fiasco. They tried mightily to make the airplane profitable after the pipeline project was initially rejected by the Government, but wound up with contracts to haul sacks of popcorn far North for theatres, unfortunately, it was prepopped and in big bags so 500 pounds filled up by bulk, the airplane. Last time I heard anything about it was several years ago when, still wearing GOLDEN NUGGET paint, it was schlepping stuff around Africa.
In his bleeding WESTERN AIRLINES dry to finance MARKAIR, Neil Bergt was operating an L-182 in MARKAIR colors, it also went kablooey when the airline did.
DELTA had a pair of L-182's that didn't earn their keep either and went away. SOUTHERN made money because they were doing 'stuff' for 'folks' until the 'folks' stopped contracting with them and all their 'stuff' went away. LYNDEN TRANSPORT is using L-182's to haul things including fuel oil to far northern locales, but they really make their money running tractor-trailers up and down the ALCAN as well as West Coast drayage so the airplanes may be a partial tax write off.(that's just speculation)
