Any of these rare birds surviving? I just found N6711 rotting in a field :(

and in the old days:

It looks amazing in the old paint job! Would make an awesome personal plane :) If this is the only one left, at least a museum should save it.

Such a lovely design. And imagine updating it with turboprops!

Even today that is an airplane that doesn't say 'I'm here' it says 'I've arrived' akin to stepping out of a mid 30's big senior PACKARD as opposed to scrambling out of a stretched ho-hum LINCOLN.

Wow!Tthat trike conversion is a sexy airplane! Makes me think of a huge round motored Beech Duke! Anyone know what all they did to do the mod? Was that an off-the shelf nose gear? Is that a set of brakes I see on the nose gear??? Thanks for posting these pics.

We have a Howard Super Ventura. If I am not mistaken the 250's were manufactured from the Loadstar airframes and uses Pratt & Whitney R-1830's.

Ours is still registered as a Lockheed PV-1 but with Howard modifications making it a Super Ventura. Originally it had P&W R-2800-31's at 2000 HP (just like our PV-2) but one of the many mods to the aircraft was adding R-2800 CB-16's that put out 2500 HP. There are many other mods too.

The cool thing for me is that the PV-1 and PV-2 type ratings are all on the same ticket namely the Lockheed B-34 type rating.

Here is a web page about our Super Ventura:

http://www.twinbeech.com/PV-1superventuraN183PL.htm

Sadly the PV-2 has taken away any time to work on her so she sits in waiting...All in good time

Here is a shot that is pretty old

I think that the Super Ventura was the ultimate aircraft in the Lockheed/Howard series and from what I have heard the Super Ventura was the fastest in the fleet. It had all of the bells and whistles that the 500 did (ADI, auto feather, anti lock brakes, speed brakes etc) except it was not pressurized. The purpose built fuselages had lots of extra structure inside, about twice the number of bulkheads and stringers, so it was a lot heavier.

Some day I would like to race one of Tony Phillippi's Howard 500's to find out. Anyone have a spare gas card I could use?

I don't believe the tri-gear had brakes on the nose gear.

The one I saw had that brake setup as well.
I'm trying to remember what the brake/wheel was from. T-28?

It looks just like a Goodyear brake from a Beech 18 to me

Does anyone know what happened to the Howard that was in the Fire Pit at SAT several years ago. Adjacent to the pit, not in it.

Ok, now that we've determined the nose gear (some, at least) had brakes, I knew that looked like brakes on one of 'em, does anyone know if it was independent from the mains? I would think that would make using brakes for taxiing difficult. I was thinking the NLG looked kinda like a Beech 18 main. Thanks for the extra info.
