I'm possibly going to Reno this year for warbird drooling and racing action!

Can anyone recommend a decent hotel? Something in the mid- to low-upper range near Stead Field, as wifey will be going too. Extra points for one of them there places that have a couple rooms connected to a common sitting room, as a pal might be going too and will need his own room.

Thanks in advance; I appreciate all recommendations!

Depends on your definition of "near". There is nothing out there close, but Reno is only 10 or so miles away. Most of the casino's have some kind of deal for the week/weekend if you book soon and many of those offer shuttles out to Stead. There are dozens of lesser hotels in the area, depending on what amenities you are willing to trade for cost.

Tried looking into renting a motorhome there? basically all you'd need is someplace dry and secure to fall down in-I'd get moving about 10 minutes ago on this. Fly in, cab it to the rental place, drive and park, drop it off on Monday and fly home-heck you could get by with a rented work van and an air matress.

True if you are a die-hard fan. In over 30 years (since 76) I have never stayed in a hotel. There have been campers, cars, vans, tents and always on-site. Up with the sun and on the ramp until they make you leave.
I live about 5 minutes from there now so all the comforts of home. Miss the camping companions though, made some good friends out there.

Personal favorites for downtown staycations are ElDorado, Legacy or Grand Sierra.

We've used the Sands over the years, not too bad. I would stay away from the smaller motels nearby the main Reno strip. They can be noisy, and some of the clientele can be less than desirable.

I have been to Reno three times, stayed at the Sands twice. The place is a little long in the tooth, and although they have made improvments, the smell of cigarette smoke in the lobby and casino can be a bit of a turn off. However, you can't beat the price. I did stay at the Eldorado down the street the year before last, and it was MUCH nicer, but you pay for what you get. It is only a week so I suggest the Sands. As you can tell a bunch of us stay there so there is a group to hang out with in the evenings.

We stayed at the La Quinta Inn, its about 19 minutes to get to the air races. In years past we stayed at the Sands, if you want to wait in line for 30-45 minutes to check in, the last couple of years its been noisy in the hall ways.

I was lucky a couple of time when in my tractor. When I rented a car, just get some cardboard boxes, as there are plenty of overpasses to camp under...less noisy when the traffic dies down, and you don't need an alarm, as when traffic picks up early, you'll get up!
