Cavalier F-51 Folks:
Someday before Dec 2014, we'll make an attempt to search the crash site of the X FAS 404 one more time & will look for that cockpit id plate & the one on the R/landing gear fm the Cavalier factory!
It's interesting that these pics exist as well as other of the young FAS pilots while in tng at S. Florida on the F-51 Cavaliers. The aircraft parked in the front is the poss FAS 405. How much training did the FAS pilots get is hard to tell. There were to many take-off accidents in P-51s & no TF-51 was ready & available for ther air-to air maneuvers with other P-51 pilots.
p.s Why FAS realized on 16 Jul 1969 that was necessary to remove the wingtip tanks in order to tangle with the more experience FAH pilots flying F4Us beats me. The other 2 FAS FG-1Ds pilots simply blinked in their evasive maneuvers on 17 July 1969 and became history in their own skies.
