Update for the NASM's F-100

Oh well, I tried but the link does not work. I received the story via the NASM's e-newsletter and that is the link they are showing. I have no clue why it doesn't work now.

One of my CAF Dixie Wing colleagues flew that F-100 into Dulles for storage and then display. He recollects the flight as a mixed sad/happy affair; sad that it was not going to be flying again but happy that it will get the attention of millions of visitors...

The NASM F-100 was not flown into IAD but Andrews AFB in 1978. The aircraft was towed to the Garber Facility where it has been in storage.
The aircraft was disassembled and trucked to the new Hazy Center just weeks ago.

Maurauderman...thanks much for the clarification.....I seem to recollect there are a few birds here and there in museums that our CAF colleagues have flown....

Is it just me, or is it sad that any airplane type that served in Vietnam usually means a 'Nam camo paintjob when one of the type gets preserved somewhere?
F-100s were painted other than camo. My Dad worked one one of the very first ones in the late 50s during his brief time in the USAF and he only ever saw them in bare metal...

Yes and no... I agree there are many other schemes and markings that would look great, however in this case this aircraft (56-3440) has a big time history in that particular conflict.
Dispite previous reports of a repaint (other than the tail) , the paint is original.

Some museum needs to gather the courage to do one, or a 'deuce' or One oh Wonder in ATC markings, want flashy colorful schemes? try any of the 50's ATC schemes-lightning bolts, flashes, stars, broad bands of bright color and regionalized unusual tail markings

I agree that the F-100 looks better in an aluminum finish with colors than in the rather drab SEA camo scheme, but Super Sabres did have a very significant combat history in SE Asia and actually served in camouflage finish longer (1966-1979 approximately, than in bare aluminum (1955-1966 approximately).

There are some great looking Super Sabres out there in the aluminum finishes. Dean Cutshall's flying F-100F has a beautiful paint scheme (incidentally Dean's Super Sabre will be flying at Thunder Over Michigan in June) and there is an F-100C at the Yanks Air Museum in Chino, CA on static display just to mention a couple that come to mind.

Nice to see the F-100 at Udvar-Hazy being prepared for display at the museum, but it is sad that so many airplanes have flown into Dulles since the 1980's for the museum on final flights never to take wing again (Super Connie, Boeing Stratoliner, Concorde, RF-8G Crusader, EB-57, F-100, F-14 are some that come to mind).

Excellant news! Thanks for the update. By the end of the year the Helldiver will be on display and sometime after the first of the year the He 219 will be one piece again when the wings are attached.
