Warbird Information Exchange

I am doing my homework for the second trip to Durham NC.

My primary goal for Sunday will be to get to the museum in Charlotte (assuming my flight arrives on time in Durham). If time and light permits, I may try to pass by the Hickory airport to see if I can spot the A-7, F-105, Fury and T-33.

Later in the week I just may try to drive down to see the F11 in New Bern.

As for anything else... I likely won't have much time. I could pass by Goldsboro on the way to New Bern. My notes indicate there are 4 on outside display within the grounds (including a F-4, F-86 and F-105), but the public can't access them. Are there any gate guards outside of or at the perimeter?

I will be flying into and out of the Raleigh-Durham airport. I think Tim indicated in another thread there is an AH-64 on display there. Does anyone know where around the airport? Google maps has good hi-res images around RDU, but finding a helicopter in them is a needle-in-the-haystack exercise.

If you have any tips they would be greatly appreciated.

Seymour-Johnson does indeed, have a guard-controlled access. I do not know how they operate, but in other similar locations, you can obtain a visitor's pass (they will ask for full i.d. and proof of auto insurance) and then visit the airplane's location.

Re: AH-64s, it's been a while since I was there, and memory is fuzzy but location should be on the East-North-East side of the field, where the Air National Guard unit is based. The AH-64s were not on display, but parked outside of their hangar.

Again, access was limited (this was pre- 9/11) since it is an operational unit.
