I love the scooters. I loved seeing them fly in the first Gulf War with Kuwaiti Air Force. I remember they had "Free Kuwait" painted on the dorsal hump. I miss watching them fly around the pattern at Miramar where I grew up in the 70's. Scooters and F4's. Those were the days.

One of the Draken avionics guys is a former USAF Demo Team chief - Carl "Opi" Falcione - a great guy and a lot of fun to work with. It is my understanding that this scooter is just one of possibly 6 or 7 that Draken has purchased. Although I really do not like the color - it should be low viz grey or high viz "1970s" colors :D

I'd like one of the NZ Bell 47G3s they have retired.

I apologise for the comments - it wont happen again.

Many of us in New Zealand are still ashamed at letting down our American and Australian friends and allies - that's all.

The positive thing is that the Skyhawks are flying again.

Thanks

Barry

I was waiting for that. These aren't airshow planes, they're working military (contractor, anyway) aircraft. Camo would be the expected paint jobs for these...

Understood they are contract guns, but dark green?? I can see low viz gray before dark green - or maybe a splinter blue/gray. I cannot think of a paint scheme for a fighter/close attack jet that is that dark even the desert camo jobs are lighter overall than that. But, having said my 0.02, I am sure Jive and Snort know what they are doing.

Not sure what the beef is with the colour, it is just the standard RNZAF scheme with Draken's titles applied. Presumably they didn't think it justified the $$$ for expensive repaints of what, after all, are working aeroplanes.

Mike! How can you say that about the lack of proper color!

anyway, I know I should have made it far more clear in the original post that as a rule I like the USN color schemes. I know that these jets have a very specific job and purpose and color probably has little to do with anything other than perhaps cost to repaint. Although there are this little gems http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBwI9aL-k7s and they aren't green or gray!

Since we are on the subject of Draken - and yes I did enjoy seeing the A-4 and 2 Macchis go up during Sun N Fun yesterday - just wish they would have taken one of the Mig 21s up too.

Does anyone know the ID of the A-4 and Mig-21 that are parked in front of their hangar on display (behind the Homebuilt camping area for those of you at Sun N Fun).

Grey was worn on some of the RNZAF Skyhawks for a time when New Zealand bought ten from the RAN. They were too high viz for our environment, and the fleet went green with the Euro 1 scheme, which was dark green, light green and medium gray camouflage. This scheme was later substituted across the fleet with the overall one-colour green scheme as now seen, which was cheaper to apply and just as effective. Green was the best colour for the New Zealand environment, where the aircraft were predominantly flying over very green bush and farm land here in NZ, as well as low down over the sea.

Nice to see some of the interest in the former RNZAF A-4K Skyhawks. I am a fan of many of the adversary paint schemes, but we always stated we were going to leave the A-4K's in the traditional RNZAF colors as a tribute. The jets have a really proud history and keeping as much of the paint and markings the same-- was really the least we could do.
