Great stuff! Thanks. I've never seen drop tanks(or whatever they are) like those before.

Great photos! Especially those 318th shots. I haven't seen that particular one of Bouncin' Bette before. Here's another...

Great stuff. The Jug is one of my favorites. Ya know, I think it may be the one aircraft I've never seen painted with a shark mouth....

Regarding the Jug with the squadron codes "LM*O"...

In today's world, that would translate to "Laughing My (you know what) Off".

Seriously, though, I am a big P-47 fan. Thanks for the pics, Mark! :D

Thanks Mark,
That last pic of the 13, 39th Fighter Squadron P-47's in formation, is taken over the foothills north of Nadzab, New Guinea. The valley floor of the Markham Valley is on the left. It's unusual for me to be able to identify geographical features(hills, rivers, etc...) in 5th Air Force pics, as one rain forest covered mountain looks very much like another. But as you can see, those grass covered hills are quite unique, and really stand out. They're only about 10 miles from the field. Thanks again, great pics.

Keith

This P-47C was sent to England and served with the 334th FS, 4th FG.
It was lost on April 3rd, 1943 when the pilot, Maj. Oscar Coen, bailed out near Alconbury because of a fire.

I don't have the info for these next four close at hand, although I know that the last one was
from the 79th FG (CO's ship, I think) and that the second was from the 405th FG.

I think this is Miss Mutt III but am not entirely sure... Lt.Col Dick Rowland of the 341st FS, 348th FG.

The XP-47N photo reminded me of the XP-47M, just two digits off with the Yanks Air Museum in Chino ...

The crashed ones are interesting. One looks like it had lots of flak damage. Thanks for posting

Definitely a Boxted bird, but the red/white/blue cowling and liferaft hanging from her hardpoints suggest she's doing ASR work for what then was referred to as "Detachment B" of the 65th Fighter Wing--eventually to become the 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron.

For those requiring greater detail:

Many will recall that we have a survivor (well, at least some significant bits of her) in this photo. 41-5920, the second ship from the end, was recovered by Randy Ferris back in the '90s.

I've lost touch with Randy over the years. Perhaps some of the Marengo contingent can fill us in on any project progress.

Good catch Dan K! Last I heard (maybe 5-6 years ago) Randy had it still in storage while collecting pieces/parts he needs. :drink3:
