Given the horrific storms that rattled thru Dallas yesterday I thought I would forward this 1943 photo of a hail damaged AT-17 / UC-78 at Altus AAF, OK.

Interesting to see that style insignia on a Stateside aircraft. I though deletion of the red surround was purely a PTO practice.

That insignia would have been prior to the red surround being added.

Can anyone cite any info on that style insignia? All I've ever read had the red outline from the very beginning of the bars, then replaced with a blue outline. Even the Air Force Museum has no mention of it

The reason for that is because they were not done painting the rest of the bar surround.Markings did not take precedence over maintenance.

That's what I was thinking too, given completed markings (looks like blue border from the sliver showing) and no markings on the other airplanes.
