F4U Folks:

LIFE Mag managed to capture a poss AU-1 showing all the main components of a fine flying machine. Built with precision,.... & built to last! c. WW II. Hopefully we'll see more the Goodyear & Brewster samples also. Photo via LIFE mag.

What a nice find!! I'm glad to see other angles of it. It looks more like an AU-1 sample. Tks

p.s Ck the nice tricycle stand for the prop!!

It's most likely an F4U-1A, photographed at Chance Vought in March 1944.

I'm guessing you thought of the AU-1 based on the lack of paint on the fuselage and several pictures of gull grey AU-1s. All AU-1's left the Dallas factory in blue paint. They were most likely changed to gull grey during a subsequent depot overhaul (1956/57).

AU-1's would have had a flat windscreen, 4 x 20mm cannons, fuselage bump just above headrest to accommodate the raised canopy, non-round engine cowling, and a red bar in the insignia.

This is an F4U-1A (although technically an F4U-1, as the -1A variant was never officially acknowledged). There are more photographs in the Life Magazine article, which came out in the May 8th, 1944 issue. There are even more shots from this shoot though, which should be in the Time Life collection people often post from here. I've yet to see any factory shots from the Brewster production line, although there are some nice air-to-air shots of Brewster Corsairs around.

This report shows a distinction in designation between the F4U-1(02390) and F4U-1A(17930) in comparison with a P-51B/C.

That's fascinating Mike! This is the first time I've seen a reference to the -1A variant in official, period documentation. You never see it in the manuals... well, I haven't come across it in the ones I have at least. Thanks very much for the reference!

F4U Folks/FG-1A:

Interesting observations! Most of the photos floating around only show the "FG-1" logo. In another subject, other than the manufacturer what are the most visible diff between the F4U-1A/D & The FG-1A/D aircraft? Tks

p.s Does anyone know how the factory ID plates (Cabin) were made?? At what point were they installed on a Corsair?? Has anyone seen any pictures of the process?? Tks
