Rare Bear on a slow, low cross country

Tue Apr 02, 2013 3:41 am

Heading home tonight from work I was surprised to see along side the freeway a parked F8F Bearcat. Rare Bear was on the back of a lowboy that had parked for the night along the I-10 freeway in Goodyear, AZ,
Not the best of photos, but the best I could do with a cell phone and flashlight

On the way to or from Reno?

With the retirement of Strega, Rare Bear must be a favorite to win the gold in September.

What is to become of Strega in retirement. Destined for a museum, or just a hangar queen?

Why was Strega retired?

The Bear is said to be going to a little warbird shop in Breckenridge....

Wow, I followed it in to Goodyear at 1:30 yesterday afternoon. I saw them pull over but had no idea they were setting up for such a long layover. My bet is they probably do most of their travelling at night and get off the roads about rush hour time but that's just speculation.

If Strega doesn't show (TBD), The Bear's chances definitely will be better, but Precious Metal, Sep Fury, and maybe one or two others have pretty good shots as well. Many questions answered in 160 days, give or take.

It got held up by paperwork and red tape. It left a week late.

Actually it's the other way around. Because of the width they are not allowed to travel at night.

If enough sponsorship is found it will race again. They do not intend to sell her or put her back to stock.

Dago belongs to one of the former crew members. It is scattered all over a hangar in pieces and is returning to stock. It will be several years before it sees the light of day again.

What is the width of the Bear as she sits on the trailer? And is that the Chapmans doing the haul?
