A "new" Spanish Fieseler Storch´s maiden flight in June 2013

A newly restored Fieseler Storch took to the skies at Bonn-Hangelar airfield in June. Have a look at the video, showing the new one in Spanish (Condor Legion) colours. There is also a second one visible, owned by Dirk Bende, who did the restorations of both Storchs.

WOW , the storch flew right over a taxiing aircraft, who's not talking on the radio? The storchs shadow passed right over the other aircraft!!! This is on the youtube link.

Forty years ago, I flew my shadow from 3000' over Air Force Two, a Sabreliner, escorted by Boston Hanscom Field fire trucks, taxiing for takeoff. No radio contact, no fighters scrambled and no FAA investigation. By the way it was VP Spiro Agnew.
I would think a highspeed flyby in a Storch over a taxiway would hardly present a hazard, unless the Cessna planned a taxiway takeoff.

To "airknocker"- You did watch the toutube link,correct, and you have no objections on the flight over the taxiing aircraft? It wasn't 3000 feet, maybe 100 ft. and you have no objections or concerns about it. WOW !!!! I don't know if a storch can do a high speed flyby.

It would appear the terminal building has a control tower cab and the videographer may have been at that location during that pass. This activity may have been under "positive control" by local authorities and controllers have been known to enjoy closeup views of interesting aircraft.

Storch is such a cool machine. Amazingly capable. I watched one take off across a runway once (I think it was 150 feet wide :shock:

)

Dirk does some beautiful work. I recall a Jumo 213 that he had on his website. I'd love to know where that disappeared to. No doubt it will re-surface some day.

Nice choice of colours with the Condor legion scheme.

Andy, the Jumo 213 was under rebuild some years ago for a German customer, to be installed in one of the 3 longnosed Flugwerk Doras. The whole project, airframe and engine was with Dirk. But well into the project the then-owner found out there was a big disproportion between the costs and the money in his pockets. AFAIK the project was sold / traded against Eric Vormezeele´s Storch. So Dirk got his Storch, and Vormezeele his Flugwerk D-9 and Jumo 213. I am not sure, if the Jumo was fully restored / airworthy by then, the airframe definitely was not. Hopefully we might see it (in the air) when it is finally finished..... Or another D-9, I certainly do hope so.

Looks more like 40' to me. Things are done differently in different countries, although I don't know if I would have performed that maneuver with so much ground activity.

The Storch is a fascinating design with an exciting history, love it!
By the way, not only is that flyby over a Cessna, but it would appear an airport vehicle with a flasher is observing from the taxiway. Oh those wild Europeans! Living on the edge!

I am surprised that an air traffic control tower would approve that maneuver in any country. I am not sure why the guy flying the Storch was not over the runway for that flyby. If something happened like an engine issue, he did not leave himself an "out" even in a slow moving aircraft like the Storch.

It is a beautiful restoration. Hopefully it is around for a long time.

B-H is the oldest airport in Germany--just celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Not exactly true, I´m afraid. Yes, they do have a tower. And that structure is definitely not left over from WWII. And yes, it is functioning, they had traffic control even when I made my PPL in the late 1970`ies (and this tower definitely did not exist then). BTW, first flights took place at Hangelar in 1909, first airshow in 1911!
