Warbird Information Exchange

There are some neat aircraft on display at Shaw AFB in SC. A B-66, RF-4C, RF-101, an O-2 and a really nice looking P-47D. You can see some photos here:

The photo of the RF-101 did not come out, and I didn't have the camera when I saw the O-2. The jets and the O-2 are just inside the gate, and the P-47 is across from the 20th Fighter Wing HQ. As with most aircraft on military bases, it's tough to get to see them without an escort.

Speaking of display aircraft, I feel that all "Real" aircraft belonging to the NMUSAF or NHC that are currently outside at mercy to the elements should be sold with the stipulation that they are replaced by the purchaser with a high quality fiberglass, plastic, whatever, etc.. The proceeds should then be diverted to the NMUSAF or NMNA for further renovations or additional facilities. Exceptions should obviously be made to any unique aircraft not currently in their inventories.

Lackland AFB is a perfect example where there are relatively rare (ie p-82) aircraft rotting. For the most part, new AF recruits don't have the time to pee in their pants when they are there let alone have time to pour over whether or not the aircraft are real.

It sure would be a nice way to preserve some of those decaying gate guardians. Are there molds available for most WWII fighters still available to make the fiberglass replacements?

Very cool. Is that P-47 real? I like they way have have pole mounted the aicraft very close to the ground. I could have fun with that photography wise.

The P-47 appears to be real. It has the ripples and dimples of actual metal skin. I didn't get a chance to check it out thoroughly, as I was leaving the base at the time and took the shots sort of on the fly. I'll try to get back up there soon and give it a more thorough check.

No listing in the WRG ser. # registry though. Does the current noseart on
the cowling spell "Superstitious Aloysius"? E4*Q would have it also in the
362ndFG, I believe.
