Gone West - Capt. Bob Gohr USN (Ret)

Mon Sep 02, 2013 3:54 pm

Folks, I just wanted to let you know another WWII hero (a term not used lightly here), retired Navy Capt. Bob Gohr has passed away. For those of you who frequent the Military Aviation Museum in Va Beach, Bob was our very first veteran guest speaker in 2008, as well as a frequent guest.

Bob was a Hellcat photo (F6F-1P) pilot, who was awarded a DFC from ADM Marc Mitscher for getting photos of Iwo Jima before the invasion, and nearly getting shot down in the process. Bob was also onboard the USS Bunker Hill when it was hit by two kamikazes and ended up going over the side to avoid the fires, so Bob had definitely seen the elephant. Bob also flew Corsairs, Bearcats and a variety of jets. He was the CO of an A-4 squadron (VA-81) in the early 60's. Fair winds, shipmate.

Please keep our shipmate and his family in your prayers.
