Hi Z.!
The second photo was published in the Squadron/Signal Aicraft No. 29 "Corsair in Action" withe the following text:
Image
I have seen a photo of another Corsair with overpainted insignia titled: "An F4U-1A Corsair aircraft of the USMC, a combat veteran aircraft, is unloaded off the USS Bismarck Sea (CV-95) off Muga Beach, CA 1944". Here it is:

As for the Corsairs in the first picture, I guess the tail letter Z was assigned to the a/c of the Naval Air Reserve in Squantum.
Cheers!

IIRC the first photo shows Corsairs flooded due to a monsoon (China 45?), not pushed from a carrier.

F4U- Folks:

Good day!

No monsoon season here with the downloading of the FG-1A F4Us! I remember a previous picture in Wix fm another angle showing several F4Us on barges. These 2 aren't going to a Navy Reserve base. They are heading for disposal somewhere in the area as the U.S markings show.

"Muga" is Point Mugu. It's been a Navy base since WWII. Those are the Santa Monica Mountains in the background. During the war it was used as a Seabee training area. Hard to say what the Corsairs were for. It may have been something as simple as training Seabees how to load and unload aircraft from barges onto the beach. To my knowledge there was no overhaul facility. The photos of the Corsairs in the water is somewhere else.

Aircraft Disposal Folks:

Good day!

It looks like thousand of aircraft were disposed of or left behind/abandoned in the Philippines, Guam, or simply nearby islands became graveyards. Australia has found a stash off the coast of Brisbane. New Zealand had c. 1960s had several thousand aircraft all over the island.

Plz ck the latest Warbirds Issue of October/November 2013 for NZ graveyard details. It's worth the price. To my surprise, some of the FG-1As samples were x UK orders.
