So how many are still grounded? And how many are still in use?

In our area they're all working.
I've seen (or have seen on local news broadcasts):
British Aerospace 146s from Spokane
Fire Boss (float equipped AG planes that can scoop water) owned by a Minnesota firm but based about 10 miles north of me
Convair 580s out of Canada
DC-10 operating out of Moses Lake
Skycrane with snorkel (impressive to see, one flew over my home a couple of weeks back).
Private and state Hueys with bambi buckets
The only fixed wing warbirds I've seen on TV are Neptunes (I believe are operating out of Coeur d'Alene) ...and S2Fs in California.

Plus Army Guard Blackhawks..

God bless them all...

Up here in B. C. I'm seeing Lockheed L188 Electras, those Fireboss singles and a Convair (580 I think). All this and the closest BIG fire is a hundred miles away. One Martin Mars is operating over toward the coast. I suspect that all possible assets are mobilized at this point -- the West is burning. We've been very lucky here in the Southeast part of the province -- no major fires here, but we have a LOT of smoke in the air. Apparently much of the smoke is coming up from the U S.

Certainly were a great many P2Vs operating from Missoula, MT and fighting fires from there as well as deployed ops.

How many B-17s were converted to turboprop for fire fighting?

One.
It was converted in early 1970 and lost on Aug 18, 1970, two crew were killed.
I don't know whether the accident was powerplant related.
