Ran across an interesting slide of Bob Hoover in his Rockwell International P-51D at the annual CAF airshow in Harlingen TX in 1976.

Great pic, the old girl really looks like she has been rode hard and put away wet though!

Interesting stain coming from the bottom wing root / doghouse area. It's lighter in color; wonder what it is...

It is common to run the engine breather vent out of the bottom of the R/H trailing edge wing fairing. This could have stained the paint and give it that look. Or possibly the scan altered the look. Normally green could be coolant as avgas is blue or purple for 100 oct or higher.
Originally the engine breather exited the R/H side of the cowling. You can still see the hole for it a little aft and below the exhaust

I know there was one P-51 that got burned up in the fire with the O2 tank, but how many Hoover Mustangs were there, and were they all named Ole Yeller?

Bob Hoover attended the Armed forces Day event @ Edwards AFB in 1968 & I took a slide of the Mustang because it was different. Sure glad now that I did. Nearly everything else sounded like vacuum cleaners.

There was one he bellied in at Myrtle Beach in the sixties. Another burned in the seventies I think. He had the forced landing on a dirt road and borrowed an engine from a farm operation another time. That dent could have been from a forced landing, hangar rash or possibly from his one wheel landings. I'd love to see a list of his former airshow mounts.

That's a good piece of trivia....anyone know who was at the controls during the forced landing on the dirt road that ended up in the trees?
