This does pop up here on WIX from time to time, but it's always good to be reminded of it. The author is correct: Unless you lived through it, you simply can't fathom the extent of the war effort. Those numbers seem mind numbing...and that is only one part of the picture. Factor in all the vehicles, artillery pieces, etc. that outfitted the Army and Marine, and the shipyards turning out mind boggling numbers of combat ships, transports and other auxiliaries.

The one statistic I like is that upon delivery of the first Essex class carrier (the Essex herself), the Navy, on averaged, received one new Essex-class fleet carrier each month for the duration of the war. While the new Nimitz and Ford class CVNs are several times larger and far more complex than the Essex-class, the Navy now gets a new a fleet carrier every three to five years...if they're lucky.
