I'm curious about the current importation laws. I recall the batch from China that came in during the late 1980's / early 1990's still stocked with cannons & machineguns.

I believe there were some restictions on imporation that were put in place not long thereafter. Not sure if those still stand, or if importing these planes is actually doable. I was told at one time by a current Mig-17 owner that no more were available for importation into the States. I'm not sure if he meant the supply had dried up, or if laws would no longer allow it.

My understanding is that only supersonic aircraft are banned from importation. You might want to look up the state department regulations to find out for sure.

On a side note, the Mig 23 at USAFM was imported by a guy in FL. He got it here then the gov (I think) came in a took it away from him. How would you like to be him? :roll:

mig 17 here in wakeman ohio, at the old ortner airport. posted pics on another thread. owned by a toledo doctor. disassembled, in polish markings no extra charge for the bird doo doo!!

Interesting about the MIG-23 - I could swear that I saw on the classic jets site that there is an importer with 2 MIG-29s for sale and already in the country. It perked my interest because a regular in Wendover who owns another Soviet Bloc aircraft was interested in going to see the plane first hand.

justed checked mt references - Morgan Aircraft Restorations in Arlington WA has two MIG-29 two seaters for sale - about 4M a piece - this is per Tim Morgan on the Classic Jet Aircraft site forum board.

Depends on how he "imported" it. Did he check before he brought it into
the US whether the original seller was from a country on the "belligerent
countries list"..or did he bring it in with the guns still installed. One will
raise the ears of the US Customs..the other the ATF.

I heard a tale a few years back of a fella who had imported a former
Eastern-bloc jet...it was sitting in storage on the docks at New Orleans,
complete with guns..he then called to have the machine registered. I
don't know the details of the rest of the story. Maybe the Feds were
satisfied with the removal of the weapons and he kept his plane...unless
it was on the belligerent list. :roll:

I'd be curious to know the country of
origin on the USAFM bird.

As far as I know..there are no restrictions on supersonic imports..as long
as the other requirements are met.

Made a few phone calls after posting this, and found that the aircraft in
question was from a country on the sh*t-list. Rather than seizing it, they
let him export it back to where he purchased it. The sellers wouldn't refund
his money...if he got lucky, he sold it to a buyer from a country with less
discriminating requirements. Caveat emptor...betcha he won't repeat that
mistake! :wink:
