America has lost another hero. A crisp hand salute and a wish for blue skies & tailwinds to a great man & brave aviator.

Very sad.

I met Bernie...I feel I can call him that as a friend...when we worked together for a small (short-lived) commuter airline in Boise, circa 1979.
He was retired from the Air force and was a gentleman farmer just outside town.
One day I flew with him on a trip to Salt lake and we had lunch together. I rode on the Jepp case between him and the co-pilot.
After lunch, we finished the day with stops in Pocatello, Idaho Falls before returning to Boise.
A great guy. Riding in the EMB-110 with him was a real honor.

He reminded me of the great guys I knew when my dad was in in the service a real inspiration. Polite, quiet and unassuming, he was the last guy you'd ever guess was a fighter pilot, let alone a Medal of Honor winner.
Remembering him, A couple of years later, when the USAF was hiring again after the post-Vietnam cuts, I earned a commission and spent 20 years in the service.

He was a man of deep faith, so I'm sure he's say don't grieve for him because he's in a better place surrounded by family.

RIP, sir.

With 1300+ volunteer hours in the SEA/Korea galleries at the AF Museum, I stood in front of his A-1E many times ... my next shift there will include a prayer in front of the plane in which he was awarded the MOH. ..
