They could have saved/sold/donated the cockpit section to a museum... crap like this just makes me ill. I understand having to reduce the fleet, etc, but come on...

It takes someone who cares, is willing to cut through the bureaucracy (there's a lot) and make the coordination with some unknown organization who would want the nose section. Timelines would have to be set up, demil actions would have to take place, permissions with the NMUSAF would have to happen, a radiation scan would have to be performed, etc., etc., etc. Unfortunately, it's easier to scrap the training aircraft when they have exceeded their usefulness. Very few people bother or even think about trying to save these planes. It doesn't even cross their minds to attempt to do it. A decision is made to scrap them and people carry it out and go onto the next project. End of story...

Completely agree. Although there are plenty around here who care, as shown time and again on this website alone. Caring is one thing, but putting your time, effort and $$$$ where your 'care' is, is always a different story. As you very well state above, there's much more to it than just going out and trying to save an old airplane. For many who try the sometimes harsh reality of 'getting in over your head' comes crashing down all too often. The flip side being that the effort, no matter what capacity, should always be commendable even if the results should end up not being what one had wished for.

Anyone interested in a Madras Maiden update? :wink:

Why does the government need to demil a plane that's been out or service for years? My cellphone is more advanced than anything on that plane so its not like some great nation secret will be exposed if someone saved the cockpit.

Any aircraft or military equipment that is turned over to a civilian organization has to go through demilitarization. You'd be surprised at what needs to be done even on an airplane that's been out of commission for several years. Its mainly about making it safe and permanently non-flyable. And, the Air Force has different rules than the Navy. Everything has a reason and it's usually due to an "incident" in the past...
