A McDonnell Douglas F-4B Phantom II (BuNo 149430) of fighter squadron VF-111 Sundowners about to be launched from the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) during a deployment to Vietnam in 1971/72. The F-4B is armed with AIM-9D Sidewinder missiles and Mk 82 (500 lb/227 kg) bombs. The relatively small weapons load was typical for Coral Sea due to the limited catapult capacity. Date 1971/72

Three U.S. Air Force Vought A-7D Corsair II aircraft (s/n 70-1006, 70-1013, 71-0342) from the 162nd Tactical Fighter Group, Arizona Air National Guard, fly in formation over the desert near Tucson, Arizona (USA), on 19 September 1981. The aircraft, each in a different paint scheme, were being tested against desert and forest background for visibility. Date 19 September 1981 -

The primary flight control is visible on the aft end of the island. Two North American FJ-4B Fury fighters of attack squadron VA-212 Rampant Raiders are visible on the flight deck. VA-212 was assigned to Carrier Air Group 21 (CVG-21) for three deployments on the Lexington to the Western Pacific between 1958 and 1961 -

The Douglas A-1H Skyraider "Paper Tiger II" (NE-572) of attack squadron VA-25 Fist of the Fleet being readied for a mission over the Mekong Delta in October 1965. VA-25 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing Two (CVW-2) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVA-41). To commemorate the mark of having delivered 6,000,000 lb. (2721.56 to) of ordnance NE-572 was equipped with a special "bomb", a toilet! The toilet was a damaged toilet, which was going to be thrown overboard. One of the plane captains of VA-25 saved it and the ordnance crew made a rack, tailfins and nose fuse for it. VA-25 personnell maintained a position to block the view of the Air Boss and the ship's Captain while the aircraft was taxiing forward to the catapult. The plane was piloted by CDR C. W. Stoddard, wingman in NE-577 was LCDR Robin Bacon. When the "sani-flush-bomb" was dropped, it almost hit Beacon's plane due to its light weight. Later that month Stoddard was shot down and killed by SAMs over North Vietnam flying NE-572 -

A Douglas A-1H Skyraider (BuNo 134563) of U.S. Navy attack squadron VA-152 Friendlies after a wheels-up emergency landing at Da Nang, South Vietnam, in December 1965. VA-152 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 16 (CVW-16) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA-34) for a deployment to Vietnam from 5 April to 16 December 1965. The foam visible was used to ensure a relatively smooth wheels-up landing. The aircraft with a tail hook also used an arresting cable, so that the damaged aircraft would slide to a quick halt -

A Grumman S-2E Tracker of anti-submarine squadron VS-37 Sawbucks landing on the U.S. anti-submarine aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CVS-12). VS-37 was assigned to Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Group 57 (CVSG-57) for a deployment aboard the Hornet to the Western Pacific and Vietnam from 30 September 1968 to 12 May 1969 -

Back when military airplanes looked cool. Glad to see a photo of a Marlin, too. Thanks for posting.

Great selection. Really a sad reminder of how boring modern gray paint jobs have become. Really apprecaite the F-106 and the Marlin, two of my favorites.
