Good day!

..furthermore, this picture indicates how Lt. Sanchez left his FAS 201 sunbathing in the TX desert c. May '57. Do we know in Jan 2014 who Lt. Sanchez was? Is he still alive S. of the border?? what were the details of the ferry trip & that particular landing??

p.s As you can see, this a more earlier pic that others shown of this a/c. The damage to the right elevator & H/stab is not shown..meaning is was done afterwards to a poss grd collision not a ground loop!! 2 B cont...Photo via Brian Baker c.1957-1958.

As far as I've known, this one, BuNo 67070, has always been credited as being the former FAS 201 in articles and details about its history and restoration: http://warbirdregistry.org/corsairregis ... 67070.html When the aircraft originally was delivered to Vintage Fighters for restoration starting in 1999, it was still in its light gray FAS paint scheme.

Good Day! Tks for the info & data on the poss location of the fuselage of FAS 201!

That possibility still exist as of today! However, Vintage Fighters never came-up with docs or any other evidence to link their Mod plate Buno 67070 to FAS 201. All that we know in Jan 2015 is that the center fuselage was of FG-1D Buno 67070 a poss FAS 203 by process of elimination.

There's still lots of information & miss-information still floating around about the FAS birds. I ck the Wix link & see nothing in there to provide this link also. I do not know who credited the V/F aircraft/fuselage to be a FAS 201 but for sure I'd like to know how did they arrive to that conclusion.

p.s Do you happen to know is Mr. Bob Hood fm Missouri is still around?? He may have some answers for us! Tks in advance.

Good day!

Contrary to popular belief over the years, the sample below did not just go "puff' from El Paso, TX c. May 1957-58. There is at NARA, diplomatic correspondence/evidence from the Salvadoran Embassy in Washington D.C dated 1 March '58 indicating the release of fund$$ by the Salvadorean Gov to obtain 5 more F4U Corsairs for spares & the repair of the wrecked FG-1D at El Paso, TX. Photo Brian Baker c. '57-58.

...P.S 1:

There is also photo evidence as well as docs that accounts for the existence of 4 (poss 5) "gull grey" FAS FG-1Ds at the Ilopango Mil ramp from c.1958- 1969 +. There is 1 sample, a FAS 211 that seems to have dual citizenship/Reg along the way & as the evidence will indicate, it could be the poss FAS 201 missing over the years! Photo via D. FAS FG-1D Folks: Good Day!
It was 57 degrees & sunny in the Midwest today..for Jan temps... that's a plus around here!

Back to our FAS 201 tale. Did Lt. Sanchez come back to fly FAS 201 once fixed?? Did FAS 201 got fixed in place?? We do not believe so. By March '58 when the fund$$ were authorized for the repair FAS was also struggling with FG-1D parts & maintaining the 19 aircraft already at home. Five more airframes were ordered just for parts plus the repair of FAS 201 c. March '58. The five spare FG-1Ds took a long time to arrive, so long that FAS was forced to contract IRAN maint for about 7 aircraft of the fleet with SALAS of Costa Rica c. May '60 plus placing some 10 aircraft in long temp outdoor storage..See photo below. Via FAS Forum.

p.s:

So what happened to our FAS 201??

Most likely it was disassembled & crated in place some time c.'58 & then trucked to Houston or LA ports in the US for the boat ride home & fixing. We do have photo evidence of the presence of at least 4 poss 5 "gull grey" type aircraft at the Mil ramp at Ilopango by May '58 or earlier. Same with the B/w photo evidence of the line-up of up to 15 FAS aircraft at he FAS boneyard mainly in the dark blue scheme including 2 poss "gull grey type in the same area c. Oct '66. Indicating by 99.9 % that FAS 201 made it S. of the Border. These unique style schemes were FAS 201, 202, 203, 204 & poss FAS 205. 2 B Cont...

Good Day!

We found the interesting NMF FAS 210 before & now we found another interesting scheme of a FAS 211 in "gull grey scheme". It would be nice to know if a pic exist of that particular scheme. Photo via AEC. Tks
