A possible cause of confusion is that it may have been a B34 Lexington, the USAAF version of the Ventura? B34...B24...

Honiara is mentioned, the only real town of consequence on the Island. I stayed there for a week in 2007 & was shown many wrecks that were accessable, but did not see or hear of that one. The photo shows her right near the water. My feeling is that she got moved somewhere else. Interesting.
