Hey eveyone,
Sorry if this is in the wrong area but I need some help. My mom is currently getting my grandfathers military service ribbons and other uniform items framed into a shadow box. She was just going to throw them in there and I was nope you can't just throw them in there. I tried looking on line but nothing seems to go back to WWII. I have included pictures of the ribbons and other items that may have been on his uniform. I can tell you he was in the 5th Air Force as a radio operator and made stops in New Guinea and the Philippines. I don't need to know what the ribbons are but just what order they go in so they can be display correctly. Any help would be great. My mom just finished turning all of his photos into digital copies. As soon as I get those I will get some up here for you guys to look at. You won't be disappointed.

Kevin

Hello Kevin,

I only recognize one of the ribbons (with the 3 stars) as the "WWII - Asiatic-Pacific Medal - (1941-46)". You should be able to find all the others at this website. You also might get some good ideas there also.

The two Ribbon set shows the Philippine Liberation Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.
NOTE: They are shown in your photo UPSIDE DOWN. APC Medal comes first--the Foreign Award second.

The middle rack shows (1) POSSIBLY Washington State Defense Service--but colors are reversed (2) IOWA RECRUITING (3) MINNESOTA MEDAL OF MERIT

The bottom rack of three ribbons are STATE GUARD/RESERVE medals.
The item with the numeral 5 is from KANSAS (Years of Service).
The two Blue/Yellow ribbons are from the State of Montana. (1) Attendance (2) Physical Fitness

He would need to rack a Good Conduct Ribbon creating a three ribbon strip followed by the APC and PLM.

The four gold bars on OD represent two years overseas service. 6 months for each bar.

I have done shadow boxes for my father and father-in-law. There are several other things that should be added to your box to fill out his service...such as his highest rank chevrons...his dog tags if available--copies can be made.

Creating a visually attractive and informative display is a matter of heraldry. Top to bottom it should follow placement of items on his uniform and where possible a balance of shapes. PM me and I will send you pics of the two I did.

I might also add the precedence is left to right in descending order. The senior ribbons are closest to the heart. I've also seen some shadow boxes with miniature medals for those awards that have both ribbons and medals.

Thanks guys for the help. This has answered some questions but now opened some more since I asked my mom about my grandfather's service. I will post any new info when I get it.

Hey everyone I just wanted to give you an update on my grandfathers AAF Ribbons and other items. I got the everything back from the the frame shop and I think everything turned out great. My grandfather was missing some of the ribbons and I had to figure out which ones. His records were destroyed in a fire in St Louis. My mother and I do not know if this is a complete set or not. For example he did not have the WWII victory medal. Well he served in the South Pacific so I assumed that he had it but was not part of the originals. Lucky for me the local Army/Navy surplus store had the ribbons that were missing. My grandfather did not fly the P-38 but was very much in love with them. I figured a picture of him in front of one would be a good way to remember him. Again thanks for everyone on here that helped out and pointed me in the right direction. The comb that you see in the picture is something that he brought back from the Philippines. The metal locket was worn by my great grandmother and had a picture of my grandfather and his brother in it.
