What happened to the restoration of a cf100 to taxi status in Ontario (Borden example)??
I remember seeing something on the tv awhile back about a group restoring and refitting engines to a cf100 so that she could once again taxi around...

Hi Peter--

Hm, bit of a CF-100 theme tonight! I hadn't heard anything about attempts being made to get the Borden Clunk taxiable, but the restoration was completed some months ago and the Clunk is stored on the base. Saw one or two recent pix and she looks magnificent, wearing 428 "Ghost" Sqn livery circa 1955.

To avoid confusion, this Clunk is not the longterm outdoor display Mk.5D ECM bird 18493; there have long been two Clunks at Borden, 18493 and a rare early Mk.4A, 18194, that spent decades in the base's decontamination-training compound before being released for refurbishment a couple years ago. (Only three unconverted Mk.4s exist, and 18194 is the last one in Canada; a number of 4Bs were converted to 5s and some of those do remain, including the other Borden Clunk 18493).

As to a flyable Clunk, never say never, but it has to be a longshot, not least because many of the survivors are on loan from DND and/or mutilated for mounting. Mk.5D 100757 (nee 18757) at Rockcliffe is technically still airworthy, having been flown in and kept hangared, but CAvM does not fly its fleet...Overhaul of the Orenda 11 engines might be a major obstacle even if a suitable airframe became available.

S.

What is the status of the one at Duxford?...

I think it has a c/r. When was the last time it flew? What kind of maintenance/inspection schedule has be applied? (if any)

The Clunks may not be pretty, but I would very much like to see one in the air.

Mike

Do you want to find locations of displayed, stored or active aircraft? Then start with the The Locator.
Do you want to find or contribute to the documented history of an aircraft? If so then start with the Airframes Database.

The Duxford aircraft has not flown since 1975. It's former owner Ormond Hayden-Baillie flew it in to Duxford from Cranfield. I would imagine the plan was to continue to operate it but sadly Ormond lost his life in July 1977 in his Mustang I-BILL. The CF100 was then acquired by the IWM.

Thanks to Birddog, we have some pics of the Borden ex-decomtamination CF-100. You can find them at...

Mike

P.S. These we just posted, so it may take a 1/2 hour or so for them to appear.

I've never seen it myself (haven't gone looking). I also haven't heard of it being moved.

I confirm that the CF-100 at St-Hubert airport is still there. It was used as engine test bed by Pratt&Whitney Canada for the developement of the JT15D fan jet engine. The engine was mount in a pod aft of the nose gear.
