The world is full of "busy bodies" it seems. Or maybe it's just governments that are full of them.

Or maybe, if it did indeed happen, it was a bloody stupid thing to do a few weeks after many of us watched a Hunter slam into a roadway full of people, resulting in forensic anthropologists needing to be called in to identify several of the 11 dead, and calling into question the entire future of jet Warbird operations in the UK.

I'm with Mike. I don't have a stake in either side but I can't imagine the CAA investigating if, as has been suggested on other sites, the photos and video are "faked".

Which is also bloody stupid.

I'm curious as to what the restriction was against the barrel roll?

Does the flight manual prohibit them, and if so, is that regulatory?

Were they in the wrong airspace?

Does the Vulcan have operating limits which specifically prohibit barrel rolls?

The first question that came to my mind is if the CAA finds them "guilty of barrel rolling", what are they going to do? Ground them?

I stand by my comment. You, of course, are welcome to your own opinion.

My only thinking would be the CAA's prohibition of vintage jet aerobatics implemented after the Hawker Hunter crash at the Shoreham Airshow in August would act as a restriction: "Flying displays over land by vintage jet aircraft will be significantly restricted until further notice. They will be limited to flypasts, which means ‘high energy’ aerobatics will not be permitted". I know that a properly-executed barrel roll should be +1G and thus not count as "'high energy' aerobatics", but I can't help but think that with the restriction in place the CAA would be extra cautious.

And as has been repeated ad nauseum on another forum and on Facebook, one Vulcan was rolled by an Avro test pilot at a Farnborough air show in the early 1950s so we know it can do it!

The aircraft has been grounded (already planned before the alleged incident), but suspending the licences of the pilots involved could be an option? (I know nothing about how the UK CAA operates so this is total armchair enthusiast.)

The CAA-issued Permit to Fly, under which the Vulcan was operated, clearly prohibits aerobatic manouvres.

I hope everyone knows I was being very facetious. :) My point being that (as already mentioned) it's had it's last flight, and was grounded before the allegations anyway. Perhaps the CAA is under pressure to "do something" just as our FAA often get's pushed as well. Hopefully it they do find them culpable, it'll be nothing more than a slap on the wrist. The crew of Vulcan XH558 has done more for British Flight goodwill than most other aircraft. Sounds to me like a big fat nothingburger.
