Interesting Caution in Flight Manual for F-100D

I ran across an unusual Caution statement in this F-100 manual

I also read Detail & Scale Vol 17 on the F11F Tiger by Bert Kinzey last week. It says that "on Septmber 21, 1956, Grumman test pilot Tom Attridge shot himself down by flying into the shells that he had fired only moments before."

I believe that this also happened with an F-104 at least once with a Vulcan cannon. I think that I'll stick with dropping fire retardant at 130 knots.

Good find, I imagine they don't need to put that in the A-10 manual

I forget which aircraft it happened to (maybe the F-100), but in the 1950's they were doing a high speed dive and fired the guns. They ended up outrunning the rounds and basically shot themself down.

I remember that to, I think it was a F9F and I also think it happened to a plane out of Navy Glenview.

No need to worry about catching up with its own rounds, but I've heard that too long a burst, will choke out the engines with gun smoke :shock:

It was an F-11F-1 in 1956.

The ejection video they showed us in Life Support Tech School, showed an A-10 firing the gun, then a few seconds later there is an ejection from the AC.

I believe the A-10 incident starts around the 12 minute mark.
