The USAAF's "Italian Thunderbolt" ... Below the Italian Macchi C.202 fighter at Wright-Patterson Field outside Dayton, Ohio, for United States Army Air Forces evaluation c 1944-45
Notice the "Stars & Bars" were applied only on the wing undersides. Great looking airplane.

The NASM's C. 202 today. It's one of the two acquired by the USAAF and could very well be the one in the photos above.

"War Prizes" does show the aircraft marked at FE-498 was formerly FE-300 and in flyable condition at Freeman Field in September 1945. It is now on display at NASM, according to the author, Phil Butler.

I definitely agree with you Mark.
That is one fine looking machine.

I think Gerry Yagen has one under rebuild.

I believe Gerry Yagen is having a Fiat G-55/ G59 being rebuilt.

I assume that the local air raid wardens near these fields during WW2 must have been alerted to captured Axis planes that could likely be seen in the area and not to worry about them?
Otherwise you'd have an Air Raid: LA situation on your hands...
