The NMUSAF just uploaded a video to their YouTube channel that's a quite interesting inside look at their non-aircraft collections. Check it out:

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force Storage Facility

On a related note, I keep wondering what they are going to do with the two empty on-base hangars, now that they have moved the Presidential and R&D collections to the main museum.

Hopefully, storage for projects. Get what's left of the XC-99 indoors,
I'm sure the base commander will appreciate that, they're typically sensitive to appearances, and they won't demolish the historic hangars which date from the glory days of Wright Field (I think one of them is where they tested a B-36 to destruction).

Happy to be corrected, but I believe the taller hanger about 300 yards south east of the R&D hangars is where the B-36 (and other) static test articles met their demise- gotta be a pretty tall place to flip a B-36 over while inside :o Iv'e stood outside her and it is indeed a tall building.

The R&D hangers are the twin silver roofed hangars, while the test hanger is the whitish roof structure to the south east. 12th street wraps around it.

Picture of the B-36 inside:

I'm going to miss the charm of the old R&D hangers. Fealt like a secret place....

You're probably correct, my statement was based on a guess. The R&D hangars are seen in a lot of historic photos, it would be a shame if they're taken down.

Hopefully they will put the C-60 inside one of those buildings before it falls apart.
