Does anyone know what kind of manifold pressure the top unlimited racers are running at Reno? We were talking about WWII aircraft at the model flying field and the subject got around to "war emergency power" and how much they were pushing the motors at this setting. I said I thought the settings the top racers were running at Reno were unbelievable but I couldn't remember the actual numbers.

If the second green range on Dago's manifold pressure gauge is any indication, it's around 110" - 120". Also note the second green range on the tach, 3400-3700! There is also an article that says the max Furias has run is 64" at 2800rpm. The article also says Furias cruises at 30" and 2000rpm for a fuel burn of 130gph!

My old info (combined with my dubious memory) is that some have run as much as 140"/Hg at 4000 RPM. Stock is 60"/Hg @ 3000 RPM as I recall.

bud granley and i took furious to reno a couple of years ago. he flew furious and i flew a t-6 racer.. to find the best settings for range he settled on 1650 and 23 in went from seattle to hillsboro or. checked fuel avail and burn then to klamath falls with same and then to reno for final check... it was runing in the 160-173mph range and i had no problem flying close formation with him... made a nice pass on arrival to reno with me on the wing in very close formation... have several pictures of the trip as i had a pax from AAFO with me.. on return trip now that we knew what the real range and consumption was we went from reno to redmond or. then redmond to seattle... i learned a few things about range on that trip... bud does know how to get the most from a acft..
