I just read in the latest FlyPast that the new 190Ds will be powered by an Allison. Now, will they really do that or is it a typo? And they said the engine was being prepped in the USA, so will it be turned upside down?

I thought I read somewhere that there was a DB being overhauled for it (Mike Nixon?) and that is why they went ahead with the mod to turn one into the long nose, long tail version.

DB ???

The Dora was powered by Junckers Jumo 213 engines. Probably has rare as DB.

Motobende of Germany was at one time working on a Jumo 213A overhaul for an airworthy Fw190D-9 project. They also were nearly finished with a beautiful pair of Jumo 211s for an He-111 (perhaps the Austrian airworthy project?)

They have some photos on their website, but no updates have been given in a very long time. See the Jumo 213 photos under their "Projects" page.

I know about the Jumo engine in the real bird and the Moto-Bende rebuild, but it's the Allison bit I have trouble swallowing...

Me too...!

You'd have to reengineer the V1710 into what amounts to an "IV1710", unless you wanted the nose of the new Dora to look completely different from the original. Maybe someone's mixed up the Dora project(s) with the reconstituted MiG-3s further east, one of which is to have an Allison in place of the Klimov or Mikulin (memory fails) V12, which WAS an upright Vee engine?

However...if the V1710 could be "flipped over" successfully...where could that lead? Doras...more 109s...anyone care for a Ki61 or a Heinkel 100D??

As I understand it the Allison 'upside down' is indeed what they are doing.......I await the result with interest..and a little trepidation. Perhaps whoever gets one will make the not inconsiderable effort to secure a Jumo and get it up and running.

For some reason I've always had the impression that some of the German V-12's were more compact than Merlins or Allisons of similar power. Is this really the case or just some odd impression that got stuck in my brain for some reason?

Thanks for the heads up Dave and I'm wishing them good luck as I'm very curious about their efforts!

I must have missed hearing about this one. What He-111 is being restored to airworthiness in Austria? And where? I'll be in Austria this fall and would like to see if I can find this aircraft and get some pictures!

From www.preservedaxisaircraft.com
He 111P-2 Werk No. 5883 Under restoration to fly. Recovered in Norway in 1974 by RAF. Joined the RAFM Reserve collection Cardington. Some parts kept (se relic section) the rest sold, is probably in Austria now in a project to reconstruct a complete He 111 with the help of the CASA 2.111 cockpit...

No info on the current status.

I know it's nit picking, but the Austrian project is a He-111P which had 2 x DB601's. It was the H model's that had the 2 x Jumo's.....?

Does this mean there's another He-111 project somewhere...?
