I will be heading to the Lake of the Ozarks for the holiday weekend. If there is any interest, might be able to stop along the way and snap some photos of the F-84 stored by CMSU in Warrensburg, Missouri, and the B-29, B-47, B-52, F-111, and KC-97 at Whiteman AFB (If I can gain access to the base). I notice that none of these aircraft have a photo to accompany and the F-111 and KC-97 do not have entries in the Registry.

Also, where would I find a data plate on a F-84F? I do not think the F-84 in Warrensburg is in the registry either.

Dante, I was in Branson a little over a week ago:

"On my way back to Texas, I decided to detour through the Ozarks / Ouachitas region, and to my surprise, I found a neat P-51D (Fiberglass) outside of the Branson, MO Veterans Memorial Museum.

It is painted in USAAF colors, with the "Donna K" lettering, and bearing serial "460356."

Acting on a hunch, I went to the School of the Ozarks, just outside of Branson. They have their own airport, and after asking for permission, I was allowed to enter their main (HUGE) hangar; they were so nice that they even opened the doors so I could shoot some pix.

This is (military) what I saw:

NC58040, "326325" L-2M Taylorcraft, in US Army colors.
N50884, "974" Ryan PT-22 (AC41-15553) highly polished metal, in the Sequoia Field, Visalia, CA USAAC training colors.

NC-29948 WACO UPF-7

N-6670 "498" a Beech C-45 (RCAF Model 3N), serial CA98 "Arctic Annie" and in the markings of the RCAF. Another highly polished metal aircraft, owned by the Ozark Military Museum.

Down the road, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, I was also allowed to go and photograph two military jets sitting at the entrance of the ANG base:

McDonnell Douglas F-4C "63-7411"
General Dynamics F-16A "82-0970"

There is also an RF-84F inside of the ANG base (you can see it from across the airport) but I was not allowed to see it or photograph.

Saludos!

Tulio

I couild not make it to Warrensburg, but I have it on my plans for the next time in Missouri.

The Miami - Big Cabin area in Oklahoma, have a few warbirds; I haven't any specifics but I recall seeing ads and notices regarding airplanes over there.

Saludos,

Tulio

All these aircraft are about 30-35 minutes from my home. I see the F-84 about every two weeks, but I havent gotten up close and personal with it in about 4 years.

"The Great Artiste" is the B-29 that flew with both the Enola Gay and Bockscar. It carried specialized equipment to measure the atomic blasts. I do not think, however, that this is the original. I read that the original was badly damaged in Alaska when it ran off the runway and was subsequently scrapped. Still, I think the Registry could use a picture of all of these birds. Missouri only has so many warbirds.

I read this on another site:

Quote:
I hate to tell you but the aircraft you see at the gate of Whiteman AFB is not the real Great Artiste. The aircraft at Whiteman's serial number is #44-61671 and was produced by the Boeing Renton plant, while the actual Artiste's number was 44-27353 and was produced by Martin Omaha with all the other Silverplate Atomic Bombers. All Silverplates were B-29's not B-29A's.

The original The Great Artiste was lost on September 3 1948 in Goose Bay Alaska. During a training mission there was an engine problem on takeoff. The pilot aborted the mission then circled around to land. He made a lengthy approach and touched down halfway down the runway. The AC couldnt stop and ran off onto an unfinished runway extension. There the pilot ground looped the B-29 to avoid a tractor. The Great Artiste was damaged so badly that it was never repaired and never flew again. It was dropped from the 509th CG and was scrapped in Goose Bay a year later in September of 1949.

I'm not sure how credible it is.
