Just wondering? Why don't they put an Ash-82 1900 horsepower direct injected radial like on the Flug Werks 190's? Seems like it would be a real monster and the Ash-82 was actually put on a Yak-3 but too late for the war and not put into production. Maybe Dave2m could answer this. Thanks, Rob

Well all I can think of is the US engine mechs don't like working on foreign engines, they are unfamiliar with them and parts are not readily available. Similar with the Sea Fury Centaurus I would think.

It sure took a lot of effort to get the engine in the Lavochkin La-9 overhauled and running properly. Not a very common engine in the west and I don't think that the Soviets or the Chinese have used them in any numbers recently.

Indeed it is appealing to put an Ash-82 in our Yak airframe! We were thinking about doing this too of but there are several disadvantages which would have to be considered:
1. As Dave said I don't think that these engines would be well accepted among mechanics in the US and spare parts are not readily available.
2. The engine is much heavier than a P&W R-2000 which would require to shift the cockpit even further back and/or delete the second cockpit. The wing could be moved forward too like on the original prototype. The flying characteristics would probably suffer too with the additional wingloading.
3. The propeller is also not so easily available and you would have to take one most probably of an Ilyushin-14 which is 4 bladed. Again you have the same disadvantages as under 1.
4. A bigger engine requires bigger oil coolers for which you have to find a place to put them.

This installation would require a big amount of engineering for a plane that in my opinion only a few would like to fly.

Flugwerke in Germany use actually a Huosai HS-7 on their FW-190 which is a license built Ash-82T. The Ash-82T is a transport version of the Ash-82FN which was used during the war on the Lavoshkins.

They say that the Ash-82 was developed out of the BMW 801 which was in the original FW-190's. This Ash engine maches the weight and the power output of the BMW better than the P&W R-2000.
