Warbird Information Exchange

I took these picture of a C-46 in a Salvage yard behind DMAFB (on the same road as the PASM). This was in 1994/1995 time frame. Anyone know what became of it?

I know this one has moved on, I think to the Yanks in Chino but I'm not positive of that.

That C-46 was in the old Bob Hoover scrapyard ( no relation to the other Bob Hoover). It was the last thing in that yard as it was being cleaned up in about 2000. The yard was full of CH-34s. They tried to sell the 34s for 5000.00 ea, then it was stepped down to 1500.00. Finally it was 500.00 buy one get one free. Jack from the military vehicle yard down the road bought them all ! The C-46 was for sale for some ridiculously low price too, something like 2500.00. When I originally saw it, it was relatively intact. By the time it was moved it was a gutted engineless shell.

So it never made it out of Tucson? Still sitting derelict?

Can't say APG85, I just know that on the next trip it was out of the yard.

I'm 99% sure it went to Planes of Fame at Chino but don't have the confirming information front of me. Maybe you can post the question at the Planes of Fame forum.

Planes of Fame does have one in similar condition. The one at Yanks was operated in Alaska for many years I believe and flew in to Chino.

I bought a great used Jeep CJ-5 tailgate (my restoration project's had rusted like they all do) from Jack in 2000 and he said he was selling the Ch-34s as static displays for $10,000...externally restored. He said he sold one to a Marine base as a static and he was in need of tail rotor blades.

I wouldn't mind one...at $1,500...shipping would be another grand or two, it would be fun to have, maybe I'd give it to the long-planned local aviation museum.

The C-46 is at the Planes of Fame. It's tail number is 44-77559 (I used a magnifying glass on my picture). Glad it was saved.......

Is it stashed in their storage yard?

It is listed in the Warbird Registry right under my nose - picture and all......

Wasn't the C-46 that went to Chino, the one that was at the Las Cruces, NM airport?????

If not, then where did that one go? I recall reading that it had gone to California, for restoration.
