Is the museum still open? Their website is not working and I know during the summer there was talk about it closing.

I believe they are planning to move to the JFK Museum if the ship's transfer is approved.

According to a trustworthy source, the Navy will be keeping the F6F.

It seems that Portland, Maine effort is actually defunct as of late 2011, but the Newport, Rhode Island group is still forging ahead ... http://www.ussjfkri.org/

It was a salt water recovery and I believe was always intended as a static restoration.

Not just re-skinning, but searching for the elusive fuselage panels. The later, "long" Banshee, is quite different from the earlier birds, and so far they have been unsuccessful in locating the many missing access panels.
