Had some mixed up today for top-coating my oil tank.
I did what I "threatened" to do which is I airbrushed some
Model Master FS595 33538 Insignia Yellow paint onto a 4" x 4"
scrap piece of aluminum and clear-coated it with PPG DCC concept
urethane clear.

Here's what the spectrum analyzer my local paint supply place has
spit out:

Wouldn't it be nice to have a "database" of all commonly used warbird
colors with PPG or Dupont numbers so a guy could just head down to
the paint shop and grab what he needed?

It's interesting that the SRM for the Fairchild details the paint colors on the interior of the fuselage. It even gives the formulations for the particular colors where they are not exactly standard specs. I'll have to dig them up when I get home tonight and post them.

All I have are the paint codes I posted at the top of this thread.

It would be helpful if warbird owners who frequent this list who have had
their birds painted would have a lash at their aircraft logbook(s). The
entry in the logs for the paint job *should* specify what the airplane
was painted with....

Does it say somewhere in the manual that the oil tank should be "Insignia Yellow"? How does that differ from "Chrome Yellow"?

I'll be getting some yellow mixed up in the next few weeks, so this is very timely!

No, I'm taking "artistic license" in painting the oil tank yellow.
I believe originally, it was primed zinc chromate with the RH
portion sprayed over with black (battery) acid resistant paint.
(the remnants of zinc chromate + black battery paint were still
on my oil tank when I stripped it).

When I get home, I'll look at the finish specs in the Erection &
Maintenance manual and see if a specific finish was called out
for the oil tank.

A quick search shows that Chrome Yellow, Insignia Yellow and
Orange Yellow all have the same basic FS numbers assigned
to them (either 13538 for a gloss finish or 33538 for a flat finish).

If memory serves, it was originally called Chrome Yellow (what
the outer wing panels were sprayed with on pre-war T-6s), it
was also called Insignia Yellow, and some time in the early 1950s
(when they started painting SNJs and T-6s "school bus" yellow),
it was called Orange Yellow. All 3 colors are available from your
favorite plastic model paint manufacturer....

Is there a MIL-SPEC for painting hydraulic components blue or engine oil components yellow perhaps?

Putting a gloss finish on zinc chromate yellow might be a good explanation for the oil tank, but what about red for fuel and blue for hydraulics? My wobble pump was originally painted red.

I've seen so many restorations with these colors but no documentation indicating that those are actually the correct colors. Inquiring minds want to know!

I think some of that comes from the markings on the lines going to the components themselves. We kicked this around a bit last fall here.

I still cannot find the NATO specs (or MIL-SPEC) online for the marking of tubing, but I think I just need to spend some more time with Google.

Finally had a look at my E&M manual (sorry for the delay). The only
thing it mentions is that "Tanks" shall be painted "Aluminum".

It doesn't say what tanks (hydraulic reservoir?, oil tank?, fuel tanks?).

No doubt, the "Aluminum" paint would be that concoction of aluminum
paste mixed with clear lacquer that NAA used all over their airplanes.

Perhaps the other "unrestored" finishes I've seen (i.e., the black
anti-battery acid paint) were a result of efforts by overhaul depots
during the aircraft's operational life.

Thanks for looking! My plane had the black acid resistant paint slathered on as well. Must have been an afterthought as it was not under the battery tray mounting or under any other brackets.
